Out of touch

Sometimes in our busy bee modern lives it becomes very easy to become disillusioned with things and be disconnected from the earth and even yourself.  This recently happened to me.  I have two children and my youngest was born with a condition called torticollis. It’s not life threatening or anything like that but it’s time consuming.  We have weekly therapy appointments for her. Daily stretches we have do to multiple times a day. Having a high need little one is very draining sometimes. You end up putting things on hold for yourself. Couple that with having other children and a house and business to take care of? Burnout happens really fast. You find yourself trying to find time to take a shower much less time to observe the Sabbaths or even to cast a circle.

Doing ” witchy” things gets shoved to the backburner, As well as doing anything just for yourself.   The household and kids needs become all consuming. What’s even sadder is that when this starts to happen you don’t even realize it.  I didn’t.  It took a good friend of mine asking me what I wanted for my birthday for me to realize that I didn’t even know! I had tons of things I wanted to get for the kids but I could not for the life of me remember or recall something that I saw and said I want that or I want to do that. Hellsfire I couldn’t even a name the last book I had read that was a chapter book! (for those that know me know just how out of character that is).

I wasn’t happy at all and it was crossing over into the way I handled personal relationships. I was grumpy and irritable and taking it out on everyone. I was so far from balanced I couldn’t even remember what that felt like. Which we all know is NOT COOL!............ So once I realized the problem I had no idea how to get my groove back. How do I go about reclaiming me? Who was I now anyways?   This idea of getting things settled stressed me out more than I was to begin with!

Then, at one of my witchlet’s therapy sessions, the therapist said something to me that really struck a cord with me. I was upset because my little was tilting more after a growth spurt  when we worked so hard for months to get rid of it and She said “ Any time you grow things change, and sometimes you might think the growing is bad. But really it’s not,  because babies have to grow and that them actually growing is something to be happy about.”

I mulled over that for a while.  I’ve come to the conclusion that change doesn’t happen overnight and little victories are still worth celebrating.  I’m not saying that everything is peachy keen and fully I’m okay with where I’m at in life but I am starting one little baby step at a time.  Yesterday I reset up my altar and enjoyed the light of the full moon.  I also sang silly songs with the girls and taught my 4 year old how to dance in the rain. I cuddled my other half just because I felt like it and took my dog for a walk under the stars.  The universe loves balance and I had forgotten that for a while.

Today's Recipe from Autumn Earthsong

In autumn, I just crave soups!  Chili, chicken noodle, creamy potato, vegetable, bean…so many good ones to choose from.  But my ultimate comfort food has got to be tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches.  I know that many of you feel the same!  Now don’t get me wrong, tomato soup out of a can works for me too, but a really good homemade soup is so much better!  Try this recipe next time you crave the comfort….

Comforting Tomato Soup

1 Tbs olive oil
2 cloves garlic, pressed
1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
1/2 cup chicken broth
1 Tb butter
1 Tb lemon juice
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper *I use more pepper than this!
2 Tbs minced fresh basil
Shredded parmesan cheese

Heat oil in a medium saucepan. Saute garlic.  Add tomatoes and all the other ingredients except parmesan cheese.  Simmer 15-20 mins.  Serve with parmesan cheese sprinkled over soup.
*Add toppers like sour cream, croutons, or goldfish crackers.

Be sure when you make a grilled cheese sandwich to have the skillet hot before you put the buttered bread down on it…it keeps your sandwich from getting soggy.  I like to use a good white bread and various cheeses like smoked gouda, Colby or baby swiss.  Try pumpernickel bread too..it’s sooo good!

Find comfort in foods that take you back to a peaceful time in your life.  Enjoy!

Blessings and Love,
Autumn

Welcome to the Saturday Craft-tacutlar!

As part of our Samhain celebration we have asked some of our more crafty Sirens to put together some step by step instructions to lure your creative side out of the waters.  Our second trip into the deep is with a wonderful tutorial from Tk for Magikal Floor Sweeps.

You can find TK on Facebook and Etsy.

Tk’s Tutorial for Magikal Floor Sweeps

Salutations everyone It’s time for another fun filled tutorial from yours truly “The Accidental Kitchen Witch” This year I’ve decided to do another fun how to on how to make your own Floor sweeps.

Let us begin at the beginning. (he he) Okay my Witches, A floor sweep is kinda of a spin off of the hoodoo practice of floor washing (another fascinating practice that’s super easy to incorporate in your daily cleaning routine).  Floor sweeps normally have one of three base ingredients instead of water that a floor wash recipe uses. Which makes oodles of sense cause you can’t sweep water. (giggles)

Anywho, The three typical bases found in most recipes are Sea salt, baking Soda, or Cornmeal. Now that doesn’t mean you can’t use other things you have in the house it’s just these main 3 are awesome binders and are easy to sweep up while offering up their own potent power to the blend your crafting.

Now There are as many types of floor sweeps recipes as there are stars in the sky so rather than making this tutorial its own novel, I’m going to concentrate on 2 kinds here, a Cleansing or Banishing sweep and a Drawing or Come To Me sweep. The super awesome thing about these are they are super easy to convert into use for carpets too! Baking soda is an awesome natural deodorizer and won’t stain your carpets!

Cleansing or Banishing Sweep (or carpet dust)
Ingredients/ Supplies:
Large bowl (preferably glass)
Wooden spoon for mixing
Mortar and pestle
Baking soda
Sea Salt
Rosemary
Bay leaves
Sage
Rue
Pepper/Red Pepper Flakes
Jar or container for storage
***So as in most things in kitchen witchery, there are not exact measurements, the ingredients here are more like a 1:1 ratio. But if you feel like adding more of a certain herb  go for it!***
Alrighty folks here’s the fun part!
Step 1:
(besides gather up all the stuff you’ll be using)
Using your mortar and pestle, ground your herbs down to a fine power….Or not it’s totally up to you!
( I Do suggest if your going to use this on carpets that you make everything as fine as a powder as possible. That way it’s easy peasy to vacuum up!)
Step 2
Mix equal parts of your herbs, baking soda, and sea salt using a 1:1 ratio using your wooden spoon
Step 3
Jar your awesome new banishing floor sweep powder up for use!
Step 4
Sprinkle liberally all over the room or carpeted area you wish to cleanse or banish something icky from.  Now it’s very important here that you follow this next part! Start in the middle of the room or house and work your way out to the walls or the perimeter of the area your working in.  This step is because by starting in the middle of the house and working your way out pushes negativity and whatever your banishing away from you and out of the house. Once you sprinkled your mixture down you can wait as long as you want or sweep or vacuum up right away, It’s totally your call! Now again remember when your banishing or cleaning start in the middle and work your way out!
Step 5
Bask in your clean house or space!
Step 6
Bury the sweepings or add them to your fire pit. You do not just want to throw them away. They’ve collected all the icky energy you’ve removed and you do not want that just hanging around.
And that people is how you make a Niffy Cleansing or Banishing Sweep!
****A note here about using Corn meal as a base verus Baking soda. Corn meal is normally only used for bringing things you desire to you or your home. Corn meal signifies prosperity and growth. That being said it’s not really ideal for removing things from your life like baking soda is .
Now on,  A Drawing or Come to Me Recipe!
Using this base formula   (Herbs 1:1)+  (Base ingredient) you can custom make a sweep to whatever your need is However just to show you another recipe that uses cornmeal for a base here is another recipe for a Good Fortune Come my way blend.

Good Fortune Head My Way Blend
Ingredients/ Supplies:
Large bowl (preferably glass)
Wooden spoon for mixing
Mortar and pestle
Corn Meal
Cinnamon
Nutmeg
Allspice
Calendula
Rose petals
Lavender
Mint
Jar or container for storage
***So as in most things in kitchen witchery, there are not exact measurements, the ingredients here are more like a 1:1 ratio. But if you feel like adding more of a certain herb  go for it!***

Step 2
Mix equal parts of your herbs and spices, Corn meal using a 1:1 ratio using your wooden spoon
Step 3
Jar your awesome concoction up for use!
Step 4
Sprinkle liberally all over the room or carpeted area. Now it’s very important here that you follow this next part! In the 1st recipe you were told to start in the middle and work your way out, This time because your trying to draw good fortune to you. You need to start and the perimeter and work your way into the middle. Once you sprinkled your mixture down you can wait as long as you want or sweep or vacuum up right away, It’s totally your call! Now again remember to work your way into the center of the space starting from the perimeter. The last thing you want to do is tell the universe you want to send money away from you!
Step 5
Bask in your clean house or space!
Step 6
These sweepings are okay to have stick around for a bit but your better off burying them or deposing of them once your done.

So there you go! Two awesome recipes to get you started!
