Today's Music: Laboratorium Pieśni - Sztoj pa moru

Laboratorium Pieśni is a group of female singers from Poland. Using traditional, polyphonic singing they perform songs from all over the world, mainly: Ukraine, Balkans, Poland, Belarus, Georgia, Scandinavia and many other places. Their music is a haunting charm that touches the soul.

Translation:
At the sea, blue sea
There was a floating flock of white swans
And where did the gray-white eagle come from?
It dispersed the flock around the blue sea
White down rose to heaven,
Gray feathers fell on a green meadow
And who will collect these feathers?
- A beautiful girl

Call of the AncestorsToni (Rowan) Sliger

Time was, elementary students created Family Trees as part of a school project. It was fascinating! Learning where we were from, and who we came from. Inevitably, there would be interesting stories – my grandfather fought in the German army in WWII, and because he refused to speak of it, I wouldn’t have known without that project. And ultimately, this project opened up a line of communication between the student and older family members, because we all wanted to know more. Do you remember stories around the kitchen table with your grandmother? Aunties laughing over silly antics when they were little girls, and great uncles reminiscing about the Old Country? And we listened, awestruck, trying to picture them as children, just like us, these generations ahead, these beloved people with whom we share a vital connection.

Over the past decades, we’ve become a people apart, and family isn’t what it once was. We no longer have generations growing up in the same neighborhoods, sharing every holiday and celebration. We’re distanced, disconnected from our roots. The recent surge in popularity of DNA and genetics testing shows this lack of connection is affecting humanity - everyone wants to find that missing piece. We understand this need, and recognize it for what it is. The Ancestors are calling.

We are of those who have come before us, both physically and spiritually. Linda Hogan writes of this in Dwellings: A Spiritual History of the Living World. She tells of a walk in the forest, listening to the Earth speak, and then “suddenly all my ancestors are behind me. Be still, they say. Watch and listen. You are the result of the love of thousands.” To truly know one ’s self, we must not merely be aware of our ancestors, we must acknowledge them and be grateful for their presence in our lives. We  understand the endurance of Spirit, of the connection that continues even after death, and by communing with our Ancestors we lengthen the thread of that connection, and their knowledge becomes ours, too. During Samhain, when the Wheel begins the year once more, the veil is thinnest between realms and communication with spirits is easiest. If you’ve never reached out, this is the perfect time to try.

Create sacred space. You may already have a place of ritual; if not, set up in a quiet place where you can spend some uninterrupted time. Set up an ancestor altar – white candles for Fire,  a bowl of Water, perhaps feathers for Air and shells or stones for Earth. Deity representations and ritual tools can be included if you use them. Add memorabilia – use a bowl from your grandmother to hold Water, a favorite book or food that reminds you of those who have crossed. Photos are a perfect addition, and a drum or rattle to raise energy is always a lovely idea. Meditative music or chanting would be appropriate, as well.

Burn incense that reminds you of your loved one. Palo Santo is my favorite for communication, but use what you like. Raise the energy, gain permissions, invite the Guardians and make offerings as you usually would. Once you are prepared, sit quietly. Focus on the Spirit and ancestors. Speak aloud your desire for communication, your willingness to receive any message they may want to share. A chant, a drum beat, a rhythm to charge the connection is perfect here. But always, keep your focus. And then … wait. Remember, messages may come right away– an instant knowledge, an immediate peace – or they may come later, in a dream, or as a sign. Be patient, and be grateful for the opportunity to share time with them.

Close as you would your other rituals, and then take a little time for reflection. Make offerings of thanks and remembrance, and perhaps journal the experience for later reflection. This can be done any time of the year, in a ritual setting or as a passing conversation. I leave my ancestor altar set all year round, and speak with my grandmother every day. I greet her when I pass the altar, and we often cook together. I miss having her physically in my life, but she’s absolutely still with me now.

Knowing where we come from – both the positive and the negative – helps guide us to where Spirit wants us to be. Be patient in your Journey, but open to whatever comes your way. May you be Blessed in all you do.

My Past Life Regression

by Sharon Rawson

I kept telling myself that it wouldn't work, not on me, just wouldn’t.
A gentle voice intruded, “Look down. What is on your feet?”

What? What does she mean what is on my feet. She saw what kind of shoes I had on when I came for this session. Why was she asking me that?

Just to humor her, I mean, she was my teacher, I looked. What I saw was two huge feet in white stockings and black shoes with a shiny buckle walking on crushed oyster shells. I looked up. I certainly wasn’t in Colorado, anymore! But, I knew that I was lying on my teacher’s couch, too. I was gobsmacked!, But not afraid. Okay, I told myself I would keep listening to her questions.

“Where are you going?”

I am not sure, just…away. My feelings seem conflicted. Guilt, irresponsibility, sadness, fear all kept dancing around in my head.

“Alright then, where are you coming from?”

I knew I had been at a town board meeting and things hadn’t gone well.

“What happened at the board meeting?”

I didn’t know if I could tell her, but I was overwhelmed with the information that was coming to me.

“Remember, this is like watching a movie, you are not really there.”

I was calmer now. I started talking to her about what had happened. I told of the old woman, the one that wandered the town at night, murmuring, mumbling what sounded like gibberish. She had been put on trial, accused of witchcraft.

The winter had been long, the spring wet, people and animals had been sick, some died. The town needed someone at which to point. I had not lifted a hand to save her. The people in the room were convinced that she was the fountain from which all of their ills had flowed. The two other men on the board found her guilty. I abstained.

Then, I walked out of the room determined to leave this place. I needed to go somewhere to see if I could find forgiveness or a way to not remember my cowardice.

My teacher began the instructions that would bring me back into the present.

During the consultation that followed the regression, my teacher asked if that life had had any lessons for me in this one. Had I seen anything that really related to the person that I am now.

I strongly dislike the smell and taste of ocean fish. I strongly dislike the smell of the ocean at low tide. I still don’t like confrontation, but I will stand up to defend someone or something I believe in now.

Eventually, I did another regression along this same time line. I found out that the me in that lifetime left the town. He took next to nothing, his horse and some provisions and rode into the wilderness. There was a lot of it back, then.  He ended up (I think) in the Smokey Mountains, where he had picked up an American Indian woman companion. When he died, he was alone and still wracked with guilt. Lots more lessons came to me from this session.

All regressions are different, but they all accomplish one thing. They let you see patterns and behaviors that you are living with now that may have their root in a past life. By examine those clues, it can help you discover ways to make your life better and more satisfying now.  At the very least, you may discover why you have that strange obsession with Japanese wood block art when you have never been to Japan and never went to art school.

Some regressions are sad, some are joyous. But, they all teach us lessons, if we are willing to admit what they are.

This was my very first experience with a Past Life Regression. I went in a little nervous and very curious. But, every session has made me understand myself more.

I know some people do not believe in past life experiences. That’s ok. Just maybe the relaxed state that you find yourself in while having a session opens the door to your higher self to come in and show you what you need to know through stories that you will remember.

Today's Recipe: Fresh Kale Pesto
Submitted by Dawn Leith-Daugherty

FRESH KALE PESTO

Wishing to eat more leafy greens such as kale, but not sure what to do with it? Try kale pesto! A milder tasting version of pesto without the basil, and can be used in so many different recipes. Perfect for when fresh kale comes back in season in fall and winter! This is probably mine and my husband’s favorite dish, we make it about twice a month year-round!

Ingredients:
Large bunch of fresh kale
1/2 cup sliced raw almonds and 1/2 C raw walnuts or pecans (1 cup total nuts). You can also use pine nuts, but almonds and walnuts are a bit less expensive and easier to obtain at times.
1 to 2 tsp. sea salt, and black pepper to taste
1/2 cup virgin olive oil
Juice from a whole fresh lime
1 Tbsp. (Or more) chopped garlic, don’t skimp!
1/4 to 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper (to taste)
1/2 tsp. turmeric (optional, but healthy when paired with pepper)
Handful of fresh basil when in season (optional)
Butter, and freshly grated parmesan or asiago (not powdered!) for the finish*

Strip the leaves off the kale and tear into pieces. Rinse kale, while bringing a pot of salted water to a boil. In a large bowl, add cold water and a few scoops of ice cubes. Set this bowl near the pot of boiling water. When water is boiling, add kale in batches and blanch for 60 seconds, or until kale is bright green. Lift blanched kale out and plunge into the bowl of ice water. Repeat process until all kale is blanched and iced.

Drain and squeeze water out of iced kale with hands and place all kale into the bowl of a food processor. Add ingredients above, and process entire contents, scraping sides of bowl a few times during processing. Add additional olive oil if needed until smooth consistency is achieved. Process until a very smooth paste-like consistency, and all nuts are blended well.

Meanwhile, boil your favorite pasta, reusing the blanching water. When pasta is al dente, remove it from the water. DO NOT RINSE. Save hot pasta water.

Mix scoops of pesto into pasta, adding additional olive oil if needed and a few tablespoons of pasta water to dish until desired consistency is reached. Add a large knob of room temperature sweet butter (not margarine!) and gently toss adding freshly grated Parmesan just before serving. Toss adding additional pasta water if needed. We like to add lightly sautéed chopped tomatoes to the top of our bowl of pasta for a delicious flavor combo! If only feeding 2 or 3 people, you will have leftover pesto. Keep in the fridge and use for pizza topping in place of tomato sauce, mixed with cheeses for stuffed mushrooms, pesto garlic bread, or make pasta again in a couple days! Kale pesto also freezes well.

*You can make this dish vegan by using oil only instead of butter and substituting vegan cheese for the parmesan. Make this dish low carb/paleo by using shiritaki zero carb noodles, or using one of the other recipe suggestions above besides pasta. Tastes great with brown rice or quinoa pasta if gluten-free! Many uses limited only by your imagination!
