Day 26 ~ Season of the Witch

Hello and Happy Friday!! We've made it through one more week and can see the last week on the horizon. We here at Samhain's Sirens sincerely hope you ALL have enjoyed the things we have had the pleasure of sharing with you. But we aren't finished yet... hold on tight! We have one more week filled to the brim with even more fun and excitement. Today's blog comes from our own awesome Kallan Kennedy from The Secret Life of the American Working Witch.

Season of the Witch
Dusk on Samhain Eve-Dravena
As we wind down the month of October, we come to one of the holiest days of the year for a witch: Samhain. While we've frolicked and told our scary stories, given you Halloween-y craft and recipe ideas, we turn our attention to the thinning of the veil between our world and the world of our ancestors. It is our time to honor and commune with them. Samhain is their night. Their time to walk the earth in remembrance of their loved ones. Many of us will put out treats to give them energy as they visit. We'll set up an ancestral altar to give homage to those we love who've passed through the veil. We'll take some time to reflect on the harvest of this year, and begin our time of introspection and preparation for the next.

In my tradition, Samhain is also a time to honor the MorRhiogan. Many honor Hecate and other "dark" goddesses at this time as well. I like that we witches don't fear death. We know it is not the opposite of life, because, when is there no life?

It is ever-changing, morphing, becoming.. and death is simply a part of that. I like that we honor death as a passage, just as we honor birth, man/womanhood, marriage, etc. We witches embrace all that our experience offers us, and at this time of year, we welcome this turning of the wheel.

This is our time. Celebrate with abandon, my loves.

Today's Crafty Idea!

Spirit Jugs
from Spoonful

These homemade lanterns will extend a ghostly greeting and good-bye to all your Halloween visitors.

Stationed on a walkway or porch, these homemade lanterns will extend a ghostly greeting and good-bye to all your holiday visitors.

What you'll need

Clean plastic gallon milk jugs
Black permanent marker
Craft knife
String of 50 clear low-wattage holiday lights (battery operated works well)

How to make it

Draw ghost eyes and mouths on the jugs. Tip: Leave the caps on while you do this, so the jugs don't dent.

Use the craft knife to cut a half-dollar-size hole in the back of each jug (a parent's job).

Arrange the ghosts near each other and string the lights between them, stuffing several bulbs into each of the jugs.
