Using the terminal powers of Samhain to process trauma.

Samhain.  How many times have we seen it?  Local papers do a special interest story on the witches at Samhain. “Samhain (pronounced Sow-in) means summer’s end.”  It’ll then go on to make endearing noises about how witchcraft  has seen a resurgence in x number of years and how we’re ‘totally not devil worshippers”.  They’ll be sure to include a photo of a non-threatening woman in black (bonus points if they can talk her into a pointy hat!) with a big smile and usually at least five candles.  It’s beyond formulaic at this point.  I’ll admit it’s better than the late 80’s and early 90’s formula of making a genuine effort to communicate on the part of the practitioner, into a spookily lit punch line about ‘the weirdoes’.

The part these outlets miss is the END in ‘summer’s end’.  I’m sure it’s easier to rest on the finely carved narrative that sensationalizes our beloved dead.  Other cultures and religions have festivals surrounding loved ones who have died, but this is so much juicer because you can include the word, “witch”.

  Instead of spending our Octobers waiting for stories to validate what we already know, that we’re just human, and trying to make a difference in this world, let us focus on our own endings.  We end things all the time.  Many folks make new year’s resolutions in January for the Julian calendar date.  We avoid the talk of ending things with language surrounding the new.  We fawn over the idea of birthing a new year, forgetting that birth is the other side of death.

We understand the year as the Wheel of the Year, admitting that time passes.  However circles have no beginning, and no end.  It makes it easier to gloss over the ending portion because we know that there will always be another.  The only flaw with this thinking is that we fail to acknowledge the passing of the current, and the understanding that we aren’t guaranteed another anything, day, week, month or year.

This time of year is important for releasing the things in our lives who have had their time in the sun, and are ready to die.  Samhain is the perfect time to process our trauma and leave it in the past, before moving on to that shiny and new we look forward to.  Trauma is our brain and body reacting to the painful events in our lives.  Our lives and our years have trauma, insidious events that color our world.

Using this time of year as a catalyst toward beneficial change is a great blessing.  It needn’t be something as traumatic as a death, a car accident or a physical altercation to cause lasting change in our lives that weighs us down.  Dealing with an abusive boss, ending of a friendship, relationship or dealing with financial worries are all stressful and traumatic.  Any event that leaves you overwhelmed and feeling alone counts.  Just because you may not have experience a death or sudden loss doesn’t mean that you aren’t dealing with things that are difficult.  Life isn’t a contest.  It can feel selfless to worry about the suffering of others close to us because they’re dealing with intense emotions, but don’t let that worry keep you from processing your own emotions.

It’s time to take time to look at your trauma.  Anyone who promises a “quick and easy ritual to release trauma” is at the very least, pulling your leg.  It’s not easy, but you are worth it.  This is all about your comfort level and ability to deal with the past.  It may be as simple as lighting candles and incense and looking at yourself in the mirror to talk about the things you need to let go of, before moving into the new year.  I will be taking a ritual bath with herbs and oils and examining my scars to acknowledge all of the things I’ve overcome this year.  Some will decide to attend counseling, good for you!  The stigma of getting help is decades past its time to go.  Acknowledging that the events of your life are best dealt with, with someone in your corner is a great step.

The important part of this process is using the terminal powers of Samhain to process that trauma.  Too often we see carrying the baggage of our traumatic past as a badge of honor.  “See?  I survived!”  Remember, the baggage is weighing you down, now allowing you to celebrate your victory.  The baggage come after the trauma, it’s not proof that the trauma happened.  It feels amazing to say we’ve survived the horrible things that happened to us.  It can be difficult to look that pain in the eyes.  Being able to put down the bags and still honor the survivor in you is the message of this Samhain.

You have dealt with a lot this year, and over a lifetime of years.  You are Brave.  You are Loved.  You are worth protecting, defending, and loving.  I hope the end of this year finds you feeling stronger than you’ve ever felt before.  You deserve it.  You are magic.

Today's Recipe by Autumn Earthsong


Now autumn is also all about apples, not just pumpkins J  I particularly love caramel apples and always have to have at least one this time of year.  But something even better?  A caramel apple in a pie!  This recipe is amazing!  And delicious!! 

Crunchy Caramel Apple Pie
1 unbaked pie crust (homemade or store bought is fine)
7-8 cups granny smith apples, peeled and sliced thin
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp salt
Juice of 1/2 lemon

Topping
3/4 cup butter
1/2 cup flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup quick oats
1/2 cup finely chopped pecans
1/2 cup caramel topping

Preheat oven to 375* Have your pie crust ready in your baking pan.  In a large bowl, toss in the apples.  Add the sugar, flour, salt and lemon juice and stir to combine.  Let them sit in bowl while you make the topping. 
In a separate bowl, combine the butter, flour, brown sugar and salt with a pastry blender until the mixture is crumbly and lumpy.  Add the oats and the pecans and stir until combined completely.
Mound your apples into the pie crust. Then sprinkle on all the topping.
Lightly cover the crust edges with foil and bake pie for 25 minutes.  Then remove foil and continue baking for another 25-30 minutes until top is golden brown.  If the top starts burning, cover loosely with foil.
Remove from oven and drizzle with the caramel sauce all over the top of the pie..let cool a little and serve warm! 
*Try serving this with cinnamon or vanilla ice cream! 

It just doesn’t get any better than this..and so easy, too!

Samhain by Amy Blackthorn


I’ve been practicing Paganism now for 21 years.  I don’t say this in a prideful way, but more in an, “I can’t believe I have been doing this that long” kind of way.  I sat down to write you, gentle reader, to talk about the Samhain season and celebration.  (Hey, if Christmas can be a season, so can Samhain, right?) The only problem is that every time I sat down to write, I stared at a blank screen for a bit.  For someone who teaches writing workshops and ‘How to beat Writer’s Block’ classes, it’s somewhat embarrassing.  I kept staring at the screen hoping that divine inspiration would hit and I’d know what to share with you.

Therein lies the rub.  You see, after doing this for so long, I feel like I’ve been there, done that, and wore holes in the tee shirt.




This photo was taken at the first group Samhain Ritual I led in 1999.  I had recently ‘come out of the broom closet’ to my parents, and it turned out that my mother’s best friend was Wiccan as well.  She had just never shared that part of herself with anyone other than her husband.  We bonded over this instantly.   The feeling I had sharing ritual space with her was thrilling, electrifying and awe-inspiring.  The feelings I’ve had the last few years were reverent, worshipful and devout.  These are beautiful and sacred but not mirthful.

So how do we rekindle the JOY of celebrating the lives of those we loved and have lost?  Isn’t Samhain a somber occasion?  Yes, it is.  This does not mean that you lose out of the mirth and reverence spoken about in the Charge of the Goddess, just because it’s Samhain.  Have your dumb supper and commune with loved ones, but don’t let the serious nature of the celebration steal the happiness you have in your hearts either.

So can we put the smile back in those Samhain plans?   Yes.  A thousand times yes.  You’ve started off on the right foot by checking into the Samhain Sirens blog.  Crafts, food recipes, musical stylings, beverage recipes, and that ever present connection with the Gods is right here.  This will get you in the mood for the festivities quick, fast, and in a hurry.




* Build an altar. It’s possible that you already have one, heck, more than one. Creating something that exists only for the purpose of this Feast will connect you to it in a way that few things can.  Decorate it with photos of loved ones who have crossed the veil, special incense and other decorations.  Meditation on the nature of permanence is natural at this time of year.  It is okay to reflect that in your choice of decoration.
* Get outside!  It’s too easy to forget about the nature part of our faith this time of year.  How easy it is to stay inside and curl up in front of a fire.  Remind yourselves why we come together to celebrate the final harvest.  We needed enough food to get us through the winter months and those grocery stores are only one natural disaster or good political conflict from being  a no man’s land.  Respect what you have.
* Remember, you aren’t limited to only celebrating on one day.  Invite friends over for an anti dumb supper.  Have everyone bring photos of loved ones they’d like to remember with happy stories and joyous fellowship.  If you make it a pot luck there is enough food for everyone and the burden isn’t all on one budget.
* Make a list of the incredible things you have accomplished this last year.  You are an even more incredible  you, now than you were last Samhain.
* Involve the kids too.  Try cutting up the Sunday funnies square by square and turn them into your own family “tarot” cards.  Work on meanings as a family and read for each other to see what the new year holds.

The important thing here is, your practice doesn’t have to lose its fun.  Celebrate this season for what it is, the miracle of the lives well lived, not the grief of loss















If you don’t crank this one as loud as you can, you’ll have a lifetime of bad luck. No one does this one as well as the original, Stevie Wonder.



The Witches’ Kitchen by Autumn Earthsong

In the Fall, my bread machine stays very busy!  Yes, I make bread without the machine too but when life is busy, or I’d rather be reading then baking bread….I use my wonderful bread machine!  Here’s a favorite recipe I make!  Do you love bread as much as I do?  It’s comfort food at its best!





Zucchini Wheat Bread
*2 lb loaf
1 cup room temp water
2/3 cup shredded zucchini
2 Tb butter, softened
2 cups bread flour
2 cups whole wheat flour
2 Tb dry milk
1/3 cup sugar
3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp salt
2 tsps bread machine yeast
1/3 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Measure carefully, placing all ingredients except walnuts in bread machine pan in the order recommended by the manufacturer.  Add walnuts at the raisin/nut signal.
Select Whole Wheat or Basic/White cycle. Use medium or light crust color. Do NOT use delay cycles.  Remove baked bread from the pan and cool on wire rack.

Kemetic Ancestral Altar by Tiffany Newson

Honoring your ancestors is one of the more common things done during Samhain. In the Afro-Diaspora one of the easiest ways to honor your ancestors is to build an ancestral altar.

Cultures everywhere honor the dead, but in Kamitic/Kemetic (Ancient Egyptian), not all deceased relatives are considered an ancestor. They only consider a relative an ancestor if he/she had self-discipline in his/her life. A relative is expected to help the living. You would not want to honor someone who was an addict in life because this person couldn't teach you anything valuable. You want to exalt those whose self-discipline made them honorable while alive.

An ancestral altar is easily adapted to anyone's purpose.

Some of the basics for building your altar:

  • Make a devoted space such as a shelf, top of dresser or table. It is preferable to cover the surface with a white table cloth, but feel free to use your own ideas and make it personal. If you plan on using lots of incense,  or are worried about wax drippings, you may want to use something to protect the surface of your altar that is easily cleaned. The white tablecloth serves as a barrier and act as a purifying agent. Alternately, you can use other items such as coarse sea salt, sea shells, crystals, gemstones or stones.
  • You'll need photos of your ancestors (deceased  relatives that you respect and/or teachers).  
  • Arrange nine glasses (symbolizing the nine netcharu-Kamitic guardian spirits) into a semi circle to stand for the guardian angel(s) that governed your ancestors. Fill them with cool water. 
  • From here you can add other items such as that ancestor's favorite jewelry, lock of hair or another item that represented them. You could also add your Deity of choice. 

This year we are adding a loved one to our family altar. My husband's grandmother, the matriarch of his family. She will be forever missed.

The Witches’ Kitchen by Autumn Earthsong

I adore October and Sundays and one reason for it is Football!  I love to put something in the slow cooker for dinner and make a yummy snack for during the game.  This recipe is quick and easy, will feed several people and everyone loves it!  It’s a family favorite for holidays too.





Hot Reuben Spread Appetizer

16 ozs shredded swiss cheese
16 ozs shredded cheddar cheese
28 oz jar sauerkraut, drained
8 oz dried beef or corned beef, chopped
1 1/2 cups mayo
Thousand Island salad dressing
Party rye or pumpernickel bread

Preheat oven to 350*
Mix first 5 ingredients well in a large bowl.  Pour into a greased 13” x 9” baking dish.
Bake at 350* for one hour until browned and bubbly.
Serve on small party rye or pumpernickel slices with a dollop of the salad dressing.
Warms up great too!!
*You can half this recipe to make an 8” x 8” dish for a smaller crowd of 4 or less.
