Using the terminal powers of Samhain to process trauma.

Samhain.  How many times have we seen it?  Local papers do a special interest story on the witches at Samhain. “Samhain (pronounced Sow-in) means summer’s end.”  It’ll then go on to make endearing noises about how witchcraft  has seen a resurgence in x number of years and how we’re ‘totally not devil worshippers”.  They’ll be sure to include a photo of a non-threatening woman in black (bonus points if they can talk her into a pointy hat!) with a big smile and usually at least five candles.  It’s beyond formulaic at this point.  I’ll admit it’s better than the late 80’s and early 90’s formula of making a genuine effort to communicate on the part of the practitioner, into a spookily lit punch line about ‘the weirdoes’.

The part these outlets miss is the END in ‘summer’s end’.  I’m sure it’s easier to rest on the finely carved narrative that sensationalizes our beloved dead.  Other cultures and religions have festivals surrounding loved ones who have died, but this is so much juicer because you can include the word, “witch”.

Instead of spending our Octobers waiting for stories to validate what we already know, that we’re just human, and trying to make a difference in this world, let us focus on our own endings.  We end things all the time.  Many folks make new year’s resolutions in January for the Julian calendar date.  We avoid the talk of ending things with language surrounding the new.  We fawn over the idea of birthing a new year, forgetting that birth is the other side of death.

We understand the year as the Wheel of the Year, admitting that time passes.  However circles have no beginning, and no end.  It makes it easier to gloss over the ending portion because we know that there will always be another.  The only flaw with this thinking is that we fail to acknowledge the passing of the current, and the understanding that we aren’t guaranteed another anything, day, week, month or year.

This time of year is important for releasing the things in our lives who have had their time in the sun, and are ready to die.  Samhain is the perfect time to process our trauma and leave it in the past, before moving on to that shiny and new we look forward to.  Trauma is our brain and body reacting to the painful events in our lives.  Our lives and our years have trauma, insidious events that color our world.

Using this time of year as a catalyst toward beneficial change is a great blessing.  It needn’t be something as traumatic as a death, a car accident or a physical altercation to cause lasting change in our lives that weighs us down.  Dealing with an abusive boss, ending of a friendship, relationship or dealing with financial worries are all stressful and traumatic.  Any event that leaves you overwhelmed and feeling alone counts.  Just because you may not have experience a death or sudden loss doesn’t mean that you aren’t dealing with things that are difficult.  Life isn’t a contest.  It can feel selfless to worry about the suffering of others close to us because they’re dealing with intense emotions, but don’t let that worry keep you from processing your own emotions.

It’s time to take time to look at your trauma.  Anyone who promises a “quick and easy ritual to release trauma” is at the very least, pulling your leg.  It’s not easy, but you are worth it.  This is all about your comfort level and ability to deal with the past.  It may be as simple as lighting candles and incense and looking at yourself in the mirror to talk about the things you need to let go of, before moving into the new year.  I will be taking a ritual bath with herbs and oils and examining my scars to acknowledge all of the things I’ve overcome this year.  Some will decide to attend counseling, good for you!  The stigma of getting help is decades past its time to go.  Acknowledging that the events of your life are best dealt with, with someone in your corner is a great step.

The important part of this process is using the terminal powers of Samhain to process that trauma.  Too often we see carrying the baggage of our traumatic past as a badge of honor.  “See?  I survived!”  Remember, the baggage is weighing you down, now allowing you to celebrate your victory.  The baggage come after the trauma, it’s not proof that the trauma happened.  It feels amazing to say we’ve survived the horrible things that happened to us.  It can be difficult to look that pain in the eyes.  Being able to put down the bags and still honor the survivor in you is the message of this Samhain.

You have dealt with a lot this year, and over a lifetime of years.  You are Brave.  You are Loved.  You are worth protecting, defending, and loving.  I hope the end of this year finds you feeling stronger than you’ve ever felt before.  You deserve it.  You are magic.

The Sirens' Song with Jennifer Rasmussen

No Samhain Celebration is complete without this song!

All Soul's Night by Loreena McKennit

Today's Recipe by Autumn Earthsong

Now autumn is also all about apples, not just pumpkins J  I particularly love caramel apples and always have to have at least one this time of year.  But something even better?  A caramel apple in a pie!  This recipe is amazing!  And delicious!!

Crunchy Caramel Apple Pie
1 unbaked pie crust (homemade or store bought is fine)
7-8 cups granny smith apples, peeled and sliced thin
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp salt
Juice of 1/2 lemon

Topping
3/4 cup butter
1/2 cup flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup quick oats
1/2 cup finely chopped pecans
1/2 cup caramel topping

Preheat oven to 375* Have your pie crust ready in your baking pan.  In a large bowl, toss in the apples.  Add the sugar, flour, salt and lemon juice and stir to combine.  Let them sit in bowl while you make the topping.
In a separate bowl, combine the butter, flour, brown sugar and salt with a pastry blender until the mixture is crumbly and lumpy.  Add the oats and the pecans and stir until combined completely.
Mound your apples into the pie crust. Then sprinkle on all the topping.
Lightly cover the crust edges with foil and bake pie for 25 minutes.  Then remove foil and continue baking for another 25-30 minutes until top is golden brown.  If the top starts burning, cover loosely with foil.
Remove from oven and drizzle with the caramel sauce all over the top of the pie..let cool a little and serve warm!
*Try serving this with cinnamon or vanilla ice cream!

It just doesn’t get any better than this..and so easy, too!

Blessings and Love,
Autumn

This is also a good legal stone.
Will help with self-esteem and will help remove self-limitations.

A very useful study stone especially with math.

Giveaway from Amy of Blackthorn Hoodoo Blends

What is Blackthorn Hoodoo Blends?  One of a kind, hand blended, artisan teas with an energetic theme, clearing out old emotional junk, settling your mind, inspiring love, and increasing protection.

I started blending my own teas and sharing them with the people I love, six years ago.  After each new person experienced the flavors and emotions I put into each and every blend, I kept hearing, “You should go into business!”  but I kept my day jobs. In February, after much soul searching and long conversations I decided to take a leap of faith and leave a stable but miserable and emotionally toxic job. It was the best thing I could have done.

I was working in my kitchen one day on a Road Opener candle.  I wanted to clear the old debris of the last job’s misery and open the way to the next stage of my professional journey.  I had anointed my candle with Van Van Oil, and lit it  when the door bell rang.  When I came back to my altar to make sure the candle was secure, the smell of the Van Van hit me.  All I could think was, “I wish I had some tea that smelled like this, I could continue the working and enjoy some lemongrass.”

It was like a bolt from the Gods. I have been teaching classes relating to the Pagan sphere for fifteen years, and my hoodoo classes are always full of raucous fun and the formulary classes the most full.  So I had all of the recipes I’d been teaching.  Lots of these recipes are herbs that are used in food and teas anyway, why not make these same potent and magical oil recipes into tea form.  Thus Blackthorn Hoodoo Blends was born.

Today's Forget-Me-Not:

Scott Douglas Cunningham
(June 27, 1956 – March 28, 1993)

Born in Michigan, Scott was one of three children to Chester Grant Cunningham (an author in his own right) and Rose Marie Wilhoit Cunningham. Rose Marie had health issues which required the family move to a milder climate in San Diego, where Scott would live for the rest of his life.

He showed a strong penchant for rocks and minerals, plants and other earth-sciences at an early age. His first interest in the occult came through reading a book called The Supernatural, by Douglas Hill and Pat Williams.

His work,Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner, is one of the most successful books on Wicca ever published; His books on Wicca led to a steady rise in his popularity, and he soon became one of the best-read Wiccan authors of his time.

According to controverscial.com,"Sales of his most popular book Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner (Llewellyn, 1988), reached over 400,000 copies by the year 2000"

His writing style was easy, and he connected with readers on a personal level. He was one of the first authors I had ever encountered who emphasized that in The Craft, what works for you is what works.

"While essentially a self-styled Wiccan and a solitary practitioner, he was initiated into several established Craft Traditions.  In 1980 he entered into the Aridian Tradition, where he undertook a course of study on Witchcraft and Magick from Raven Grimassi.  Then in 1981 he entered the Reorganized Traditional Gwyddonic Order of Wicca, and the Ancient Pictish Gaelic Tradition.  Additionally, he was an initiate of the American Traditionalist Wicca" (Knowles).

He wrote over 30 books on the occult, with nearly half of them being about Wicca (see bibliography below).

Scott died in 1993 of AIDS-related cryptococcal meningitis.

He has made a profound mark on many within the Pagan community, and is sorely missed.

He is loved.

He is remembered.

The Siren's Song with Jennifer Rasmussen

Longtime Traveller

CL's Cocktails: Felix Felicis

Serves 1
To make simple syrup, just heat equal parts sugar and water until fully dissolved, then cool.  You can buy it easily enough at any liquor store but why when it’s so easy? So that’s that bowl there; homemade simple syrup!

Ingredients:
1/4 oz simple syrup
1/4 oz lemon juice
1.5 oz ginger beer
Champagne or other sparkling wine
Directions:
Mix simple syrup and lemon juice in the bottom of a champagne flute. Add ginger beer and fill with Champagne.
I thought we would start the season off with a light, sparkling drink!  This turned out delicious but, if we’re being honest here, it didn’t have the Autumn/Halloween flavor and flair I was going for. I’ll admit it; I was suckered in by the Harry Potter theme! I willingly admit I am an addict. I was hoping the ginger beer (which I’m addicted to now, thank you very much) would be sufficient to give it that autumn-y kick but, alas, the lemon juice and sparkling wine/champagne, overpowered that element as far as seasonal flavor goes.
Still, incredibly delicious! I would absolutely recommend making it though I will probably save it as a Summer drink.

Paula's Paleo Recipes: Pumpkin Pancakes

Fall is in the air and what comes to mind? Sweaters, hoodies, hot chocolate, fires, and pumpkins!  So to start off with the Paleo foods I am going to introduce you to Pumpkin Pancakes.

This recipe comes from Practical Paleo.  So far I love this one the best!

Ingredients:
4 eggs
½ cup canned pumpkin
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
2 TBS pure maple syrup (optional)
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1 tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp baking soda
2 TBS butter or coconut oil (plus extra for pan frying)
Whisk the eggs, canned pumpkin, pure vanilla extract, and pure maple syrup together. Sift the pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, and baking soda into the wet ingredients.
Melt 2 TBS of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Then, mix the butter into the batter.
Grease the skillet and spoon the batter into the skillet to make pancakes of your desired size. When a few bubbles appear, flip the pancakes once to finish cooking.
Serve with grass-fed butter and cinnamon or sliced bananas.

The Witches’ Kitchen by Autumn Earthsong

Pumpkins pumpkins everywhere in October! Pumpkins are so cheerful, or done up as a jack o’lantern, spooky and fun! I love seeing pumpkins at the garden centers and front porches in my neighborhood.  I also love cooking with pumpkin..whether from a can or fresh scraped from the inside of a pumpkin!  This recipe would be a great ending to a fabulous harvest meal.

Harvest Pumpkin Cheesecake
Crust
3 cups broken gingersnaps
1 cup chopped pecans
1/4 cup sugar
2/3 cup melted butter
Preheat oven to 350* In a food processor, finely grind cookies, nuts and sugar. Add butter; process until well blended.  Press mixture onto bottom and sides of a 10” spring form pan.  Bake 10 minutes.

Filling
4 (8 oz) pkgs cream cheese, softened to room temperature
1 2/3 cups sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 (15 oz) can pumpkin
2 Tbs whipping cream
2 Tbs rum
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp allspice
1/2 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp ground cloves
4 large eggs
Place a 9”x 12” pan filled with water on the lowest shelf in the hot oven.  This helps the cheesecake bake without drying out.
With an electric mixer, beat together first 10 ingredients until smooth. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until just combined.
Pour into prepared crust.  Bake 1 hour and 15 minutes until puffed and light brown.  Sprinkle with a little more cinnamon and let cool; then chill overnight.
*Would be lovely garnished with gingersnap cookies cut into leaf shapes or pecans arranged pretty on top!  You could top with caramel sauce or stir a little maple syrup into some whipped cream and top with that! Yummy!

Blessings and Love,
Autumn

Jennifer Rasmussen!

Samhain by Amy Blackthorn

I’ve been practicing Paganism now for 21 years.  I don’t say this in a prideful way, but more in an, “I can’t believe I have been doing this that long” kind of way.  I sat down to write you, gentle reader, to talk about the Samhain season and celebration.  (Hey, if Christmas can be a season, so can Samhain, right?) The only problem is that every time I sat down to write, I stared at a blank screen for a bit.  For someone who teaches writing workshops and ‘How to beat Writer’s Block’ classes, it’s somewhat embarrassing.  I kept staring at the screen hoping that divine inspiration would hit and I’d know what to share with you.

Therein lies the rub.  You see, after doing this for so long, I feel like I’ve been there, done that, and wore holes in the tee shirt.

This photo was taken at the first group Samhain Ritual I led in 1999.  I had recently ‘come out of the broom closet’ to my parents, and it turned out that my mother’s best friend was Wiccan as well.  She had just never shared that part of herself with anyone other than her husband.  We bonded over this instantly.   The feeling I had sharing ritual space with her was thrilling, electrifying and awe-inspiring.  The feelings I’ve had the last few years were reverent, worshipful and devout.  These are beautiful and sacred but not mirthful.

So how do we rekindle the JOY of celebrating the lives of those we loved and have lost?  Isn’t Samhain a somber occasion?  Yes, it is.  This does not mean that you lose out of the mirth and reverence spoken about in the Charge of the Goddess, just because it’s Samhain.  Have your dumb supper and commune with loved ones, but don’t let the serious nature of the celebration steal the happiness you have in your hearts either.

So can we put the smile back in those Samhain plans?   Yes.  A thousand times yes.  You’ve started off on the right foot by checking into the Samhain Sirens blog.  Crafts, food recipes, musical stylings, beverage recipes, and that ever present connection with the Gods is right here.  This will get you in the mood for the festivities quick, fast, and in a hurry.

* Build an altar. It’s possible that you already have one, heck, more than one. Creating something that exists only for the purpose of this Feast will connect you to it in a way that few things can.  Decorate it with photos of loved ones who have crossed the veil, special incense and other decorations.  Meditation on the nature of permanence is natural at this time of year.  It is okay to reflect that in your choice of decoration.
* Get outside!  It’s too easy to forget about the nature part of our faith this time of year.  How easy it is to stay inside and curl up in front of a fire.  Remind yourselves why we come together to celebrate the final harvest.  We needed enough food to get us through the winter months and those grocery stores are only one natural disaster or good political conflict from being  a no man’s land.  Respect what you have.
* Remember, you aren’t limited to only celebrating on one day.  Invite friends over for an anti dumb supper.  Have everyone bring photos of loved ones they’d like to remember with happy stories and joyous fellowship.  If you make it a pot luck there is enough food for everyone and the burden isn’t all on one budget.
* Make a list of the incredible things you have accomplished this last year.  You are an even more incredible  you, now than you were last Samhain.
* Involve the kids too.  Try cutting up the Sunday funnies square by square and turn them into your own family “tarot” cards.  Work on meanings as a family and read for each other to see what the new year holds.

The important thing here is, your practice doesn’t have to lose its fun.  Celebrate this season for what it is, the miracle of the lives well lived, not the grief of loss

If you don’t crank this one as loud as you can, you’ll have a lifetime of bad luck. No one does this one as well as the original, Stevie Wonder.

The Witches’ Kitchen by Autumn Earthsong

In the Fall, my bread machine stays very busy!  Yes, I make bread without the machine too but when life is busy, or I’d rather be reading then baking bread….I use my wonderful bread machine!  Here’s a favorite recipe I make!  Do you love bread as much as I do?  It’s comfort food at its best!

Zucchini Wheat Bread
*2 lb loaf
1 cup room temp water
2/3 cup shredded zucchini
2 Tb butter, softened
2 cups bread flour
2 cups whole wheat flour
2 Tb dry milk
1/3 cup sugar
3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp salt
2 tsps bread machine yeast

Archeology of Samhain
By: Sam Curtin from Chronicles of an Anthropology Nerd (http://anthrobum.blogspot.com)

When it comes to explaining the origin of practices – religious or otherwise – most of us anthropologists look to the archaeological record for evidence of these practices. Artifacts used in rituals, religious sites, and texts from the origin period are helpful in shaping this knowledge of practices. When it comes down to Samhain, there really isn’t much evidence in the archaeological record. We have evidence of many sacred sites in Ireland and we have texts that reference the practice of these rituals, but finding tangible evidence has been something archeologists have struggled with.

However, there is one site that is referenced a lot in medieval text: the Hill of Ward or “Tiachtga.” This hill is located near Athboy which is now in the modern county of Meath. This site has been referenced as a host for the feast of Samhain. It is characterized by its prehistoric ringfort (an ancient circular fortification of earth or stone, found especially in Ireland) and is 380 feet in height. The legend goes that the druids would journey up the hill to light huge fires; this would signal the start of the Samhain festivities. Evidence of these fires go back to pre-Christian times.
There is a good amount of medieval manuscripts that refer to “Feis Teamhrach” (also known as the feast of Tara) which was rumored to be held three days before and three days after Samhain. This feast was held at another important Irish heritage site: The Hill of Tara. It is thought that this was also a site for Samhain rituals but there is little evidence to back up those claims.

When you think about it, it kind of makes sense that there isn’t much archaeological evidence surrounding Samhain. The Celtic pagans didn’t worship in temples or erect large buildings to practice their rituals. They celebrated in nature, feasting and praying the gods/goddesses of the nature around them. Most of Celtic Paganism is routed in Nature with a “harm none” philosophy. This would mean that if a site was laughed trashed with artifacts after a ritual, they would be going against all that the rituals stood for.

What we are left with is the texts and the stories from that time. Even those have their problems since most of history was influenced by the Roman Empire who were Christian. They focused on the “evils” of Samhain rather than the historic significance. Modern day pagans know about Samhain through the oldest form of history: storytelling. Stories of Samhain rituals have been passed down from generations but “word of mouth” isn’t something that can be added to the archaeological record.
